Self-taught master wood sculptor Dan “Heffy” Hefferson creates hyper-realistic animal carvings that are currently displayed at the Mindpower Gallery in Reedsport. Heffy uses unique techniques to color his art, including mixing Crazy Glue with natural particulates like turmeric for yellow, blueberry powder for blue, and beet root for red. His dedication to his craft even led him to spend seven days on a rock outcrop in the Farallon Islands to study sea lions up close, an adventure that included a female sea lion stealing his escape boat. The resulting sea lion carvings feature millions of points to simulate realistic skin, a feat so detailed that Guinness World Record representatives determined it was an impossible task to count them.
Wood sculptor Dan “Heffy” Hefferson creates realistic colors for his artwork by mixing a base of Crazy Glue with various natural “particulates”. To achieve his vibrant color palette, he turns to Mother Nature and uses the following ingredients:
- Turmeric powder for oranges and yellows.
- Blueberry powder for blues.
- Beet root for reds.
- Parsley powder for greens.
When he needs to dilute his colors, he mixes in baking soda or water. Because water and Crazy Glue do not chemically mix, he will sometimes use a mixture of water and a particulate to directly stain the wood.
To make the eyes of his large animal sculptures look lifelike, he finishes them with a covering of epoxy to create a realistic “shiny, liquid look”.
Hefferson notes that his unique coloring technique requires caution, as mixing Crazy Glue with these natural particulates causes the glue to harden so quickly that it can generate heat, burn fingers, and even smoke. You can view Dan Hefferson’s wood sculptures in person at the Mindpower Gallery in Reedsport. If you are planning a visit, the gallery is located at 417 Fir Avenue, Reedsport, Oregon 97467, and its regular hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm.
