Measure 10-171, which will appear on the May ballot, is a proposed amendment to Section 45 of the Reedsport City Charter.

Additionally, Reedsport citizen Michael Moss has proposed a specific change to the City Charter during a recent City Council meeting to address the high turnover rate of the city’s Police Chiefs. Under the current charter, the City Manager has “general supervision and control” over the Police Chief.

Moss proposed amending the charter to give the Police Chief sole supervision and control of the Police Department, which is the same level of authority currently held by the city’s Fire Chief. This proposed change would effectively make the Police Chief the City Council’s “#2 employee,” meaning the Police Chief would report directly to the City Council and could be fired by them, rather than being supervised by the City Manager.
