The Belted Kingfisher Wildlife photographer Becky Bartow recently shared her experiences photographing the Belted Kingfisher, a fascinating bird recognized by its shaggy crest and dagger-like bill. Kingfishers hover over water and plunge headfirst to catch fish, frogs, and crustaceans. Bartow recounted a rare opportunity at a local pond where she witnessed and photographed extraordinary courtship behavior between a male and female Kingfisher, an event that involved the male diving and presenting his catch to the female while issuing a loud chatter.
